Chapter 3

Worms are people too

Keri

Fluffy went happily on his way when I gave him the address, and everyone else is waiting for me up front of the house when I get there. Armed and ready to go. It’s a silent group, containing more people than I expected. With a nod, I climb into the wagon waiting for us and wave Bis to the driver’s seat. He knows where we’re going, and it’ll save time.

The Fairies he brought with him are all humming with magic, a little-known fact is that most Fairies are as powerful as a Fae. The Fairy hide things like that about themselves because they’re smart. Power attracts attention, but they also toil in near slavery and are better people than me. I’d be blowing some shit up.

“How powerful is he with his Triad? Do you know what kind of skills they have?” Ciar asks after we’ve been traveling for nearly an hour. Ciar is one hell of a strategist and using the tidbits of information Bis can give him will allow him to form a plan of action.

A good one.

“There are two of the three women active from his triad. Linda a gentle soul, who strongest ability is also healing magic. She’s his Hook. Then there’s Maryann, she’s his Anchor and favors fire. She’s the missing one, but as far as I know has never hurt anyone. Then you have Franc’s favorite, Sia, who like him is greedy for status and wealth. She’s gleeful when hurting others and will go out of her way to do it. We avoided her as much as we could because in some ways, she’s worse than Franc. Her abilities are weather magic, and she’s the strongest out of the three women. That’s why she’s his Pinnacle.” He pauses and I can almost physically feel him picking through the memories of his time there. “There are some days that we thought that Linda and Maryann were hostages as much as part of his Triad. They’re not allowed to leave the house, or to have friends. When Franc had dinner parties, only Sia could attend and the other two were locked upstairs out of sight. Honestly, we felt sorry for them.”

It amazes me that someone who was essentially a slave, treated as terribly as Bis probably was, still has pity for someone who, on purpose or not, contributed to the shittiness of his life. I’m not sure I’m even in the same time zone as his level of forgiveness.

As we get closer to the property, I smell the zoo–a word I’m starting to detest–before I see it. The grounds are wide open and sprawling, with picturesque gardens, bushes shaped like all manner of creatures. It’s a green advertisement stating, ‘look at me, I’m rich.’

As the wagon lumbers up the winding driveway, I spot the entrance to his vile entertainment attraction. The misery coming from it is so thick that it’s an invisible fog in the air, pressing down on you like weights. But the ‘zoo’ itself is so silent it’s eerie.
